Family STEM Activities to Ring in the New Year!

Happy New Year! As the countdown to midnight approaches, why not celebrate by participating in some fun STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) projects? These activities are not only educational, but they can also add an extra element of excitement to your New Year's Eve celebration.

Here are a few STEM projects to try out on New Year's Eve:

1. Create a New Year's Eve time capsule.

Gather up some items that represent your year and place them in a container. You can include photos, mementos, and even handwritten notes about your experiences. Seal the time capsule and plan to open it up on a future New Year's Eve to reflect on the past year and see how much you've grown.

2. Experiment with light and color.

New Year's Eve is all about bright, festive lights and decorations. Try creating your own light-based projects using materials like colored cellophane, mirrors, and flashlight bulbs. You can also try using prisms to split white light into its different colors, or create a simple kaleidoscope using a cardboard tube and some small objects.

3. Make your own noisemakers.

No New Year's Eve party is complete without some loud and festive noisemakers. Try making your own using materials like cardboard tubes, beans, and decorations. You can also experiment with different sounds by using different materials or altering the size and shape of your noisemakers.

4. Build a New Year's Eve countdown clock.

Why not build a simple chain of paper to count down the days to 2023? Or another idea is to create a simple clock to countdown to the New Year. You can have your kids adjust the time each hour as the new year approaches. Either way you are engaging your children and getting them excited about what the new year has to offer!

Overall, there are plenty of fun and educational STEM projects that you can try out on New Year's Eve. These activities are a great way to celebrate the start of a new year while also learning something new. So why not try one (or all!) of these projects and ring in the new year with some STEM fun?
